Outlook Mobile App Not Working
1. Force close and reopen the app
iPhone: swipe up from the bottom and hold, then swipe Outlook away. Android: open Recent Apps and swipe it away. Reopen and give it a minute to catch up.
2. Check notification settings
If mail's arriving but you're not being told about it:
- Phone Settings → Notifications → Outlook → confirm notifications are allowed.
- Inside Outlook: Settings → Notifications → confirm the account has them turned on and isn't set to "Focused inbox only" if you want alerts for everything.
3. Clear the app's local cache
Android: Settings → Apps → Outlook → Storage → Clear Cache.
iPhone: there's no direct cache clear here — sign out of the account inside Outlook and back in instead (step 4 below).
4. Remove and re-add the account
- Inside Outlook: tap your profile picture → Settings → select the account → Delete Account.
- Restart the app, then add the account again and complete sign-in fully, including any permission prompts you'd normally skip past.
5. Update the app
Outlook mobile updates frequently to keep up with providers changing things on their end. Check the App Store or Play Store for a pending update — an outdated version is one of those causes that's easy to overlook and surprisingly common.
FAQ
Why would force-closing the app actually fix anything?
Mobile apps occasionally get stuck in a bad connection state that a simple refresh doesn't clear — force-closing and reopening resets that state completely.
My mail is arriving but I'm not getting notified — what's causing that?
Check your notification settings specifically, both within the Outlook app and your phone's system-level notification permissions for it — this is a separate setting from whether mail is actually syncing.
How often should I check for app updates?
Whenever you're troubleshooting a sync issue, it's worth checking first — an outdated app version is a common, easy-to-overlook cause that a quick update resolves.
